Maserati has won the second round of the FIA GT Championship, the gruelling night race at the Italian Adria track at the weekend (15-16 May 2009), lifting the Maserati MC12 drivers Michael Bartels and Andrea Bertolini to the lead in the 2009 Drivers’ title fight.

“We worked intensely all weekend and we faced the race aggressively, attacking from the start,” said Andrea Bertolini at the finish. “I am very happy with this outcome because, with the Maserati MC12 retiring at the end of the season, it is the MC12's last victory in Italy. We may now lead the championship, but it remains a difficult battle and the final result is still uncertain.”

Maserati almost had a 1-2 finish, with both MC12s dominating the race, but Mueller/Ramos lost second place after a drive-through penalty was enforced. Despite driving very hard after the penalty they could not make up the difference on the Hezemans-Kumpen Corvette, although they did make it onto the third step of the winner’s podium.

The next stage of the FIA GT championship will be held in Oschersleben (GER) on 21 June.
